A little bit of history

Mossley is known for hills, mills and its three county corners (Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire). It is a typical former mill town for the wool and cotton industry.

In 1750, 39 years before Beechwood House was built, Mossley was still a hamlet, the main industries being farming and woollen cloth manufacture. The terraces of handloom weavers cottages can still be found in a number of parts of Mossley. You can find more about Mossley's heritage here and here. There are great heritage trails around the town which creates a wonderful visual history of the town

Our landscape

The wild Pennine landscapes that surround us remain relatively undiscovered. Here you'll find everything from rugged rocky outcrops and broad swathes of moorland with huge views, to gentle canal towpaths and independent cafes.

There is beauty all year round, with spectacular views over Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire.

Saddleworth Moor also forms part of the South Pennines Moors area and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area due its abundant birdlife, with breeding populations of red grouse, curlew, and merlin; plus golden plover, dunlin and the short-eared owl.

Saddleworth itself is packed with iconic landmarks too – such as the Pots and Pans stone above Uppermill and Greenfield, which legend claims was left behind after a battle between warring giants Alphin and Alder. Then there's Hartshead Pike on the border with neighbouring Ashton, plus the Indians Head and the Trinnacle above Dove Stone Reservoir.

Entertainment

Mossley is a lovely town; it borders on Saddleworth's picturesque collection of villages, Lydgate being a short walk over the hill from the Lodge. Whilst it is an escape from busier towns and cities, and although it is not a place for late night clubs, there is plenty of entertainment to be found during the evenings.

Live Music/Plays

There are great music scenes at The Railway, Greenfield, the Gillery, Mossley and the Church Inn, Uppermill, famous for its home brewed beer, and serves one of the  cheapest pints in England.

There are many local cabaret acts to watch out for, performing cover versions quite often in pubs around Mossley and Saddleworth, but arguably the best and most popular is Morgan. He always gives an outstanding performance, and if you're lucky enough to catch one of his gigs, a great night's entertainment is guaranteed.

Other pubs in the area also occasionally include live performances, such as The Farrars Arms and The Wellington, and a monthly Friday night Drop-In Acoustic Night at The Cross keys Inn, Uppermill.

Also, The Civic Hall, Uppermill and Saddleworth Players at Millgate Arts Centre, Delph are worth checking out. Then there's The George Lawton Hall in Mossley for plays and concerts.

Just over the hill in Holmfirth you can catch some great concerts at the Picturedrome, one of the finest intimate music venues in The North of England.

Comedy

The very best in live stand up comedy is brought to you regularly by Off The Rails Comedy Club, at the Royal George on Manchester Road, Greenfield. Tickets can be purchased behind the bar or from the Off the Rails website, and it is often possible to pay on the door, though it is advisable to phone beforehand.

Every year there are the Whit Friday Band Contests, but throughout the year there are concerts and other performances taking place. In particular, check out the websites of the three bands in Greenfield, namely Boarshurst BandGreenfield Band, and Friezland Band, and also check out Mossley Band, Dobcrossand Uppermill.
